Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs

Getting ready for college...early

GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. It is a federally funded program through the U.S. Department of Education.

The Southeastern Oklahoma Enterprise GEAR UP Partnership is a federally funded five-year GEAR UP program awarded to Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The Partnership serves a cohort group of over 1800 students in 17 school districts throughout Southeastern Oklahoma. This specific cohort group of students will continue to be served by the GEAR UP Partnership beginning in 2001 and continuing through their sophomore and junior years of high school.

Students work with community mentors through the HOSTS program of GEAR UP.

The specific goals of the Partnership including increasing student skills in math, science and language arts, therefore increasing the number of students who attempt and are successful in the pursuit of a post secondary education.

The Partnership will meet these goals of academic remediation in Math and Language Arts with the HOSTS mentoring program and with the A+ science software program. GEAR UP also offers college awareness services, college tuition options through OHLAP, as well as cultural awareness activities.
