Oklahoma Parents as Teachers
OPAT means a brighter future
OPAT stands for Oklahoma Parents as Teachers. A state-funded program, OPAT is a free and voluntary program for all families with children from birth to age three. OPAT supports parents as their children's first teachers in building foundations for living and learning.
The program is designed to provide parents the opportunity to enhance their child's development in all areas:
- language
- intelligence
- social
- emotional
- physical
There are many life experiences which will influence learning. We hope your experience with OPAT will help prepare your children for a successful future in school and beyond.
Help your child get a great start
School partnerships should begin when learning begins—at birth. This is the philosophy of OPAT. We believe parents are their children's first and most influential teachers.
The Durant Independent School District is eager to work with you as partners to help your child grow and develop to his or her maximum potential.
Participant services
OPAT offers practical ideas and suggestions to make parenting even more fulfilling. As a participant, you will receive the following services:
- group meetings with other parents to:
- share parenting experiences
- discuss developmental stages
- gain information and discover activities to stimulate your child's development
- home visits with a parent educator
- receive information on:
- health and safety
- positive reinforcement
- how children learn from play
- a resource and referral network for special services, as needed
- educational toys may be borrowed from our Toy Lending Library
