Six elements of the program
The Safe School Healthy Students initiative has six elements:
- Safe Schools Environment
- This element is meant to improve campus safety, increase security equipment and personnel, create crisis management teams, monitor enforcement, and complete comprehensive safety reviews.
- Alcohol and Other Drugs, Violence Prevention and Early Intervention
- This element is to offer prevention programs to intervene in the development of drug and alcohol use and abuse, prevent violence among students, address tobacco use, increase positive peer pressure, and character education.
- School and Community Mental Health and Treatment/Intervention Services
- This element addresses social and emotional development of students. Services established include early intervention for at-risk students and families, screening evaluation, intervention/treatment services for students and families, referral to community providers, consultation for district staff, and training.
- Early Childhood Psychosocial and Emotional Development Services
- This component is designed to focus on providing support to high-risk families and young children not yet in school and pregnant teenagers. This will include working with community partners to improve access to medical care and other services, provide encouragement and support in parenting, child development, and address social issues related to the risk factors.
- Education Reform
- This element focuses on improving attendance, participation, and instruction of students. This includes some upgrading of technology equipment for schools sites, training for staff on managing behavioral problems, use of truancy officers, involving parents and developing a mentoring program.
- Safe School Policies
- The promotion of safe school policies to address a variety of issues (drugs, guns, alcohol, attendance) to improve school safety within the school district is the goal of this element. This activity will review current policy and procedure, work toward enforcement of policies, and work with students within the juvenile justice system to meet their educational needs.
