Summer Programs

Who is eligible?
First American and non-First American students enrolled in participating schools and receiving free and reduced-cost school meals
may qualify for free food this summer.

What services will be received?
Qualifying families receive an EBT card (works like a debit card) to purchase healthy food for the summer.

The Choctaw Nation Partnership of Summer School Education (POSSE) partners with Durant Schools to provide a 23-day summer learning program for qualifying Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students identified by an approved Oklahoma Reading Sufficiency Act assessment as students in need of intervention. POSSE utilizes a hands-on, engaging educational environment to deliver intense reading and math intervention and enrichment activities. Morning sessions focus on reading and math, and afternoon enrichment activities aim to deliver instruction in STEM, art, music, nutrition, and physical education.

POSSE operates at no cost to families. Each day, students receive a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack. Students are provided basic school supplies, a camp shirt, and trade books for continued reading practice at home. Also, students attend educational experiences that align with the summer learning educational theme.

Indian Education Summer Enrichment is for grades K-6.  This week long of activities offers arts and crafts, storytelling, music, and other instruction in math and reading through cultural materials.

Credit recovery is available for students who failed core classes or did not receive credit due to excessive absences. The DHS counselor's office will contact students who are in need of credit recovery. Seniors who fail courses for whatever reason may not graduate until recovery is complete.

Summer Driver's Education is offered when possible. Sign-ups will be available in the DHS Main Office each spring. Please watch for announcements at school and in the newsletter for dates. 

Students must be at least a Sophomore and 15 years old or a Freshman and 15 1/2 years old to participate. Students are accepted based on capacity and in the order of age.
