The Durant Independent School District recognizes that the special gifts which qualify an individual to be considered gifted and talented must be valued as irreplaceable natural resources. Educators and community members must ensure that these special gifts are not ignored. To this end, experiences must be provided that are consistent with the abilities and potential of the gifted and talented child so that every child feels important and is empowered to be a happy, successful, and responsible human being.
The mission of the Durant Independent School District's GT program is to identify all gifted and talented students in the school system; to provide a differentiated program which will give students the opportunity to develop a level of competency consistent with their aptitudes, goals, and interests; and to meet the needs of gifted and talented students educationally, psychologically, and socially.
Secondary gifted and talented students take advantage of concurrent enrollment, AP courses, curriculum contests, independent study, differentiated instruction and enrichment in the classroom, and Academic Team opportunities. The following programs have been implemented for elementary gifted and talented students:
Kindergarten - 2nd grade (classroom enrichment)
3rd - 4th grade (weekly pull-out program)
5th - 6th grade (activities will be included in the weekly Flex Schedule)
